Notebooking – Otto Group, 2015/16

Established in 1949, the Otto Group is a large ecommerce site that also offers mail order services, logistics, financial services, and real estate. Their 2015/16 annual report references their work in mail order services via its use of faux paper textures and handwriting.

A variety of scanned paper textures and types are used as design elements in the report. These are used primarily at the front of the report and help to set the tone—that of a company involved in a range of businesses. These are sometimes layered, one on top of the other to create the illusion of depth, or coupled with small icons of pushpins.

Two typefaces that simulate handwriting are used to add annotations to pages and to work as titles. These are supplemented by hand-drawn arrows and other notations. It creates a sense of activity and dynamism.

The layering of photographs on top of blocks of colour or scanned notebook pages completes the look of the report, creating the feel of a scrapbook or journal belonging to someone working hard and enjoying the job.
